Planning for Summer and Fall: Registration Advising
As the end of the semester nears, our advisors are busy preparing the first year students to register for their summer and fall courses. In the weeks leading up to registration, all students enrolled in the First Year College are required to meet with their advisor to discuss courses that will help the student work towards their intended and potential degrees. The advisor will then release the advising hold on the student’s account. Like orientation, the advisor works with the student to keep their options open. However, we also hope the student has gained clarity about their interests given the work in USC 101, attendance at the Major Exploration Series and Career Connections events, and with how they performed in the previous semester. Therefore, the courses identified for next semester will keep in mind the matriculation and degree requirements for the respective interests.
Advisors support students in identifying appropriate courses for the Summer/Fall semesters using various resources. These tools help students to navigate the requirements for the various degrees at NC State, and plan for upcoming semesters. When students meet with their advisors, they are expected to attend with a list of 5-7 classes for the spring. They should understand why each class is important to their degree, and how it fits into the NC State requirements. For example, does the course fulfill a General Education Program requirement, help the student to meet matriculation requirements, or is it a free elective for their major being used to earn a minor? Understanding the rationale for each course helps students to plan for the future, and provides the student with a sense of purpose when taking the class.
Notes about Registration:
- Registration is organized by credit hours earned, so first year students will register after all of those with more hours. The majority of our students will be registering between April 6th -7th.
- Be prepared to support your student as they explore the different options at NC State. They may be overwhelmed by the different times and fitting together a schedule that includes all of the coursework they had hoped.
- Tools to support class planning: Semester-by-Semester Plans, Degree Audit, and Change of Degree Audit (CODA) requirements.
- When in doubt, students should not hesitate to ask the advisor for clarification! We encourage students to let us know if they are not comfortable with the recommended courses so we can work with them to put together a schedule they look forward to.

Greeting Parents and Families!
This message is to serve as a gentle reminder about the FYC Parent & Families Weekend Event- Battle of the Beach. The event will take place tomorrow between 4:00pm-6:30pm on Tucker/Owen Beach. Students will be battling in the categories of Volleyball, Cornhole, Tug-o-War, attendance, & canned food donations for this years naming rights to the beach.
Parents and families will be factored into the attendance numbers, and are encouraged to bring canned food donations. All donations will be counted into the final Canned Food Drive numbers toward the Tucker/Owen competition, and will be donated to the WolfPack Pantry. The WolfPack Pantry aids students do not have access to food. Also, if parents would like to sign up to play Cornhole with their student, sign ups for the event will be from 4:00pm-5:00pm, and Cornhole will start promptly at 5:00pm.
To drop off canned food donations, and be counted in the attendance numbers, make sure you stop by the FYC Check-In table located on Cates Avenue between Tucker and Owen Residence Halls. You will also receive a welcome packet with some Advising and FYC information. We look forward to seeing you all there!
